Q: Trying to verify what mechanic has said about my son's 1995 Audi A6 Quattro.?
We knew it was leaking something from the engine. I had taken it to 3 other mechanics and they all said they couldn't find the source but that he would probably need a new engine in 2-3yrs. That was 1.5yrs. This mechanic said it needs half shaft work, because the boots are torn and hydrolic fluid is leaking and he could loose his streering. Are we safe until he hear noises from turning the steering wheel or should I start looking for a new car? They also said he needs new struts, shocks, upper&lower pan gasket work and two screws holding the skid plate.I"m a mom just trying to figure this out.

A: The half-shafts are not part of the engine. However, you have to take a lot of stuff apart to replace the CV joint boots, and this would be a good time to do the struts. A lot of the same labor is needed to do both CV joint boots and struts, so you can save money by doubling up on these. On the front of the car, "struts" and "shocks" are the same thing. My old Audis (older than yours) had struts all around and really didn't have shocks. I had to do a lot of disassembly to remove the struts to replace the insert. (The strut insert is the shock absorber part of the strut.) If the CV joint boots are torn, they are leaking grease, not hydraulic fluid. If the car is also leaking hydraulic fluid, it's coming from either the brakes, the clutch (if it's a standard), the power steering or the transmission (if it's an automatic). The CV joints will be quickly ruined if all the grease leaks out or if dirt gets inside the joint. As far as your other leaks and/or possible engine issues, it's hard to say without looking at it. A good independent mechanic can probably do the struts and CV joint boots for $500 or less. You will have to decide if that is acceptable to keep the car operating. Good luck!

Q: I drive a 1998 Audi A6 AWD Quattro, how much would it cost to replace my brake pads?

A: As stated earlier by prior respondents the cost will range on the model of A6, the place you get the pads replaced at, and what type of pads you are looking for. Say you are looking for high performance pads vs. say asbestos pads that taxis use since they are very cheap but very noisy. The price range for all four brakes could range from 600 to 200 depending...

Q: I need New Wheels for my 98' Audi A6 Quattro 2.8?
Right now I have the regular stock 16" OEM rims on them and was wondering what kind I should buy, The wheels right now are scratched up and was wondering of any good websites to suggest with cheap prices. Thanks. I am not looking to go over 16" Rims just to stay in that range.

A: I just replaced mine last year and got some Fuzions, I believe they are made by firestone or one of the other major companies. Ive had them for a year and like them, plus it only cost be like 250$ for all 4. Just google "Fuzion tires".

Q: 1998 Audi A6 Quattro?
how do you change a front trun signal bulb on a A6 ? its in the front headlight assy

A: Separate the air intake pieces. They should come out easily. The light box is directly under this. Two round wire clips hold a plastic cover. If you remove the cover its easier to get at the white plastic holder that requires a slight turn to remove. Be careful to seat this holder properly when installing.

Q: i have an audi a6 quattro 1998.. problem when i come to a slow stop or junction it cuts out why???

A: ckeeck your fuel pump and fuel filter/if the pump isnt putting out the proper pressure it will cause the vehicle to stall and die out also if you have a stopped up fuelfilter it too can cause the vehicle to die out. Also check on a proper tune-up[sparkplugs,wires,distributor cap and rotor-if available, and fuel filter] include a fuel system flush/if injectors, have a certified mechanic do a injector cleaner service also have your exhaust system checked/ slso have your battery checked as well as a complete system charge test(electrical).Last but least poor timing could also give you the same outcome! Hope this helps

Q: Should I buy an 1999 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro?
A dealer is selling me a 1999 A6 v6 2.8 Quattro with 98,000 miles. He said the compressor and the regular tune up has been done. And that their mechanic has cleared the car free of any problems. He is selling it to me for $7500. Should I buy it or should I stay away from Audi's? need help..thank you.

A: I would highly advise you to avoid used Audi'd older than 2 years that are not covered under warranty for the simple reason they are quite expensive to maintain and worse, unreliable. Although many owners say they enjoy driving them and are mostly reliable, most are leases for 3 years or less and thus keep the miles below 40k miles, long before any major work is required- ie timing belts, turbos (on 1.8 and 2.0l) cylinder head gaskets, rings, transmissions, wheel bearings etc etc etc. You must seriously consider the cost involved in keeping an almost 9 year old Audi with 100,000 miles on the odo- is it really worth the long term costs including depreciation, maintenance and repair. In the end how many solid reliable miles will you get out of this vehicle. Consider your total cost of owner ship, not to mention the temperaments of these vehicles- one day they work, the next who knows? Does this vehicle have a warranty. Do you persoannly know this dealer? Are you prepared to spend some serious money to change the timing belt which will soon need to be replaced? Unless you set aside a seperate budget, expect to be surprised with the repair bill. My advice, stay away and ignore the people who say "oh this car is fast...", "my brother had one for 500k miles and not a single problem and he drag races his..." Trust me and consumer reports, you'll thank me later.

Q: i just bought a audi 1998 a6 quattro 2.8 and was wondering....?
well the guy i bought it from said u shouldnt change the transmission fluid now is this true? also should i put premium in this thing or unleaded? because in the dash it says unleaded fuel only? and when should i do tuneups on this car every 30k? and should the oil be synthetic?

A: Premium yes- although it can take mid-grade, but performance will diminish. Also, if the PO used synthetic then keep on using it. Tuneups are not necessary every 30K. At 70K make sure the timing belt, rollers, H20 pump, and thermostat are changed. Get the Bentley manual, it will help diagnose problems should you encounter any.

Q: Audi A6 4.2 Quattro Hissing and rattling?
I have an Audi A6 4.2 V8 Quattro. When i 1st start the car in the morning there is a loud hissing, a rattle, and sometimes a loud tapping. The hissing gets quieter but is still present after 5 minutes of running. It starting hissing like this since the timing belt was replaced along with a water pump, a thermostat, ribbed belt, and belt tensioners. The rattle is permanantly there and i am unsure when it started. Sometimes there is a loud tapping noise and its there only for a few seconds then goes (Maybe tappets). At the moment the car seems to be using a lot of oil. There has been no visible patch on the floor either at home or work. I topped it up yesterday and have done about 60 miles and it sounds like it needs more now. When the engine is running i can hear a loud rattle coming from the right hand bank (Oil filler side) when looking below the covers i can see some bolts about 4 inches above the exhaust manifold are wet looking with oil but nothing below them is. Any ideas? Well i have managed to identify that i do indeed have an oil leak. I have not managed to find its location as yet. On the right hand side of the engine. (Oil Filler side) i can see hot oil smoke coming from around the exhaust manifold. I am thinking that its below the manifold as it appears dry ish although i do also think there is a leak from the rocker cover gasket. Will have a look when more light. I am possibly thinking that it could be the oil pressure sender. I am thinking that it will be on that side of the engie. Does anyone know where this might be on this engine?

A: A very difficult one to try to answer without seeing/hearing the car A6 has hydraulic tappets they rely on oil pressure to operate them when the belt was changed part of the air intake system has to be removed for access I would think that this has not been refitted properly as any leak here will cause the hissing all I can suggest is that you return the car to whoever carried out the timing belt change and ask them to have a look I'm sorry that this is not a definitive answer but I hope it helps a little best wishes & good luck

Q: Where Can I Find A Free Owners Manual For A 1999 Audi A6 2.8L Quattro?
I Just Bought One, And Sadly I Was Too Excited To Realize That There Was No Manual With It. :(

A: Either buy or order one from the dealership or call around to the auto wreckers and see if they've any vehicles like yours in stock bec if they do it's quite possible that it has a owners manual in it that you can buy real cheap.I prefer do it yourself auto wreckers bec you don't have to pest them and wait for them to find you stuff you can simply go and check the vehicles yourself Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd drop by the person or dealership you bought the vehicle from and just state you thought the owners manual came with the vehicle maybe they'll supply you with one or find it.

Q: What should I get- a 2009 Audi A6 3.0T quattro, or a 2009 BMW 535xi? Also, 335i convi or audi s4 convertible?
I am going to buy either an 09 audi a6 3.0t quattro or a bmw 535xi luxury sedan next year. I want to know which one I would get. I am a frequent driver and I drive in the night-2 am or so. If I come to know that those might not be the perfect ones, then I have another question. I would come to buy either one of those two, but also, what about the 335i convertible and the s4 convertible? THANKS!

A: The Audi A6 is better choice. BMW 5 series has bad interior design and ergonomics. The beeping noises for seat belts and starting the car are also very annoying. The Audi A6 looks more luxurious and drives better. The BMW 335i is better convertible just because it is more fun to drive and looks a bit better, but the Audi S4 is safer and has AWD.

Q: Audi Front Grill Quattro Badge?
I have a 1998 Audi A6 Quattro and need to find a replacement for the Quattro badge this sits on the left side of the front grill which includes the clips that should come with it. Can anyone help me, I don't feel like buying it on ebay for $40.00 what a rip-off.

A: Probably going to be the cheapest unless you can get one off a car thats been wrecked.

A: shouldn't make a diff....

Q: what type of gas do i need for a audi A6 2.8 quattro ?
is it 89 or premium?

A: I have a 94 Audi 100CS, same thing as an A6 except the name, and mine requires at least 91 octane in it. No gas stations around me sell it so I always run 93 octane. Gas costs a little more but its worth it when you're driving that Audi!

Q: Resetting brake pad sensor on Audi A6?
How do I reset/repair/replace the sensor on my rear brakes for an Audi A6 Quattro? -The warning light and warning beep are driving me nuts! (I did replace the rear brakes)

A: The dealer should have reset the indicator light; otherwise, there may still be a problem with the front brakes.
